Scenic Six Bells
Our new memorial. Costing £200,000, the memorial is a 12.6m high statue of a miner and is constructed from slices of corten steel. The statue stands upon a 7.4m high sandstone face plinth.
The name, age and town of each of the 45 victims is cut into the corten steel band that surrounds the plinth. The memorial towers 20m above the former colliery site - scene of the 1960 disaster.
Entitled "Guardian," the project completion date was set to mark the 50th anniversary of the disaster at Six Bells Colliery.
